Chic Speak
Filed Under Fashion | Leave a Comment
What’s a Fashionista without her chic speak? How well do you know your couture talk?
BLOGTIGUE: A condition of exhaustion caused by reading too many blogs and over blogging. More and more fashion and street style blogs are appearing on the net, but similarly extinguished like a flame at the end of the night. Chic Speak: I’m suffering from blogtigue. I can’t even check Fashionista without feeling lightheaded.
CHANEL SURFING: Visiting the cinema repeatedly to catch every naunce of films of Coco Chanel playing this fall: Coco Avent Chanel starring Audrey Tautou, and Coco Chanel & Igor Stavinsky (starring Anna Mouglalis). Just don’t forget to wear your tweed and pearls and worship the temple of Karl on your way out. Chic Speak: I’m busy Chanel surfing tonight, we’re doing a double feature at the multiplex.
CLOSET SHOPPER: A classic recessionista who digs up her wardrobe archives to bring back some old favourites. Chic Speak: I’m a closet shopper, everyone knows a Chanel boucle jacket is better the second season around.
ELSA SCHIAPARELLI: The 1930s legendary Italian designer and queen of surrealism- her best collaberations were with master surrealist Salvador Dali- inspired the season’s playful looks on hot runways from D&G to Moschino Cheap and Chic. Chic Speak: Isaac Mizrahi was channeling Schiaperelli this season with his quirky handbag hats.
GLAM SLAM: The sartorial equivalent of a grand slam in baseball: fabulous bases loaded (perfectly dressed turns at events build up the style quotient), then one knockout look on the red carpet scores our girl a fashion home run. Chic Speak: Did you see Penelope Cruz at the Cannes? Talk about Glam Slam!
GLAMBAMA: Glamorous dressing and a debonair sartorial preference for hot young designers. Exemplified by US First Lady Michelle Obama. Chic Speak: A Thakoon dress and date night? You’ve turned into such a Glambama!
JOLIE LAIDE: Look to the French socialite Lou Doillon as the ultimate example of this French contradiction- not your typical beauty but striking nontheless. Chic Speak: She’s so jolie laide with the Nina Riccci jacket and bedhead.
LA PARISIENNE: This coquette embodies the chic style of a Pasisian ‘it’ girl. She follows Garance Dore’s website religously and adores the girlie vibe at LV, Balenciaga and Lanvin. Chic Speak: Who knew Leighton Meester was such a Parisienne? Her LV outfit at the Met’s Costume Institute was more Left Bank than Upper East Side.
ON THE VERGE OF A LACROIX: A state of a financial crisis that refers to legendary couturier Christian Lacroix’s shocking file for bankruptcy. Chic Speak: If I charge any more shoes on my credit card, I’ll be on the verge of a Lacroix.
THIGH-SCRAPER: Tall glamazon boots that reach mid-thigh, as seen all over runways such as Rodarte and Prada this fall. Practical (warm knees at least!) and frivolous at the same time. Chic Speak: I need thigh scrapers to pair with my new leather mini.
UPCYCLING: Using reclaimed and repurposed fabric to create another new, high-end look- much like recycling, but with a more fashionable spin. Chic Speak: She upcycled her dad’s judge’s cloak into that sexy LBD.

Where To Find Vintage Online
Filed Under Fashion | Leave a Comment
I have this awesome Chinese cut red dress. The tag says it’s a size 14 but it’s form fitting if you’re a sexy eight. But you know back during the 40s sizes were just different. There was a war going on then, you know. I wasn’t there. I heard about it from my grandma, the original owner of the dress.
In any case, in the event that you don’t have a grandmother who stock piles everything that she and her children have owned since BIRTH you might need a place to fill your vintage needs. Because vintage clothes are awesome and pretty and everyone needs some.
Fortunately, the internet is there for you:
1) Mod Cloth
This is a fun little boutique featuring everything from dresses to shoes. You don’t see many retailers sporting vintage shoes, so this is a rare find. Or maybe I just love shoes. Too much. Anyways, they also carry a wealth of accessories to augment your perfect retro look whether it be 40’s swing or 60’s flower child.
And they’re giving it all to you for 15% off until August 8th!Just shop your vintage little heart out, put it all in your “basket,” thenenter the super special code (ModCandy 15) at checkout! That’s it. 15% off some of the cutest vintage-inspired goods on the web.
2) Newport News
Didn’t expect to see this site on the list, huh? Well here’s the thing, you find the greatest treasures off the beaten path. Although there’s nothing vintage about their clothes, their shoe selection has some fantastic vintage-inspired finds. Nestled in between all the smart shoes for work there are a few hidden gems. Look towards the boot section and pumps.
3) ChinaTowner
Another clothing site filled to the brim with great clothes. The site actually caters to many different styles. There are quite a few vintage inspired dresses and tops among the ranks as well as some really cute jackets and blazers. It’s summer now so you can catch a few good deals on the winter stock.
This site is quite a bit more pricier than the others listed here but well worth it. They carry dresses and shoes centering around the Pin Up look. Got curves? Then try this place. Nothing looks sexier on a girl with curves than a cute dress and a pair of killer pumps. Channel your inner Monroe on this site.
This is a site much like Baby Girl but a little more cost friendly. The selection isn’t as big, but what they do have is stellar. They spotlight mostly the 40s and 50s in their clothes, but there are few 60 surprises mixed in there as well. Where this site really shines is the price. Even the full price items are pretty low on the cost scale so you can build a wardrobe with a bulk of these items and pick up a few pricier items from one of the other shops.
I love this site. Simply because it has EVERYTHING. I could spend hours browsing through pages of clothes and still find something new everyday. They have clothing inspired by the 20’s onward. The site itself is a little all over the place but fairly simple to navigate.
At first glance you would think that it’s all waist cinching dresses and five inch heels. But that’s only the first glance. This site also carries the cutest mini dresses. Sure we all want to be Bettie Page, but sometimes we want to be Twiggy too. And this site lets you do it.
8 ) Phix Clothing
Much like VH1, I love the 80’s and you know you do too. Cyndi Lauper was so hot. I’m not ashamed to admit my love of 80’s pop icons! Bright colors and a sea of ruffles. Stockings, leg warmers, the whole nine. This site has it all.
It’s all fine and dandy to have vintage inspired clothes, but nothing sets you apart from the crowd like real vintage wear. And its not always expensive. Take this site, for example; the prices are reasonable and the selection is good. Pick up a few items to add an authentic feel to your wardrobe.
No matter what decade you’re channeling there’s an online store out there for you. No need to deal with the scents and sounds of the local Salvation Army – you can get your vintage fix from the comforts of your very own desk (or bathroom, if that’s how you roll).

Making Glasses Work For Your Face Shape
Filed Under Beauty, Beauty Tips, Fashion | Leave a Comment
Many of us wear glasses out of necessity, but did you know that you can make the most out of the design to enhance the shape of your face? Here are some tips on the type of spectacles you can get according to your face shape.
OVAL
The balanced, oval face is considered the ideal shape, and lends versatility and many options in terms of hairstyle, makeup, spectacles and accessories. Most shapes and styles of glasses will fit you, except extreme geometric designs.
SQUARE
You have a wide forehead, a square jaw, and your cheekbones are in line with your jaw. To create a more balanced face shape, look for a lightweight oval or rounded styles, and draw attention to your cheekbones. Avoid square or rectangular shapes which will emphasize the angles of your face.
RECTANGLE
You have a long, narrow face with a squarish chin. You will need to give an illusion of widening and shortening the face, and softening the jawline. Lightweight, wider frames will counteract a narrow face and close set eyes. Avoid angular frames as well which will only serve to accentuate the angles of your face even further.
TRIANGLE
If you have a broad forehead and cheekbones, which taper down to a small chin, you have a triangular face shape. Try not to get frames which extend beyond your temples. Frameless spectacles are an excellent choice, and the arms of the glasses should be lightweight.
CIRCLE
The round face needs to create illusion of angles and vertical lines, so frames that are slightly wider than your face should be your top pick as these will make your face seem smaller. Square or rectangular frames balance a round face, but avoid round shapes and full, frameless lenses.

Fall 2009 Colours Prediction
Filed Under Fashion, Press Release | Leave a Comment
The colour experts over at Pantone have announced what they predict will be the hues for the upcoming Fall 2009 palatte.
The top 10 colours include
- “American Beauty,” a balanced, true red;
- “Purple Heart,” a jewel-tone purple;
- “Honey Yellow,” a warm, more subdued version of the sunny “Mimosa Yellow” (Pantone’s 2009 Color of the Year);
- “Iron”, a brown-gray tone, serving as the “new black”
- “Burnt Sienna,” an earthy shade of orange;
- “Creme Brulee”, a gray-ed down beige
- “Nomad”, a light brown hue bridging between beige and light gray
- “Rapture Rose,” combining the vibrancy of fuchsia and the softness of pink;
- “Warm Olive,” a rich yellow-green; and
- “Majolica Blue,” a deep teal.
“The fall 2009 palette is more unique and thoughtful than the typical autumnal hues of years past,” Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman said in the report. “Designers recognize the desire for fundamental basics that speak to the current economic conditions, but also understand the need to incorporate vibrant color to grab the consumers’ eyes and entice them to buy.” Leatrice says that of the 10 colors, the neutral Iron received the highest rating from designers, a choice that points to practicality. Over the last few seasons there has been more of a trend toward “trans-seasonal” dressing, in which apparel and accessories can be used from one season and into the next, so trends linger and aren’t abandoned quite so quickly.
What this means for fashionistas: Despite the colours being of unique hues, they are easy to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe, so it’ll look fresh on you anytime. The best part which will be wearable even in the seasons before and after it is meant to debut. Easy and fashionable colours to wear are the trend!

Smart Shopping Tips
Filed Under Fashion | Leave a Comment
I saw these smart shopping tips recently and I think they’re really great. I must have lost count of the number of impulse buys I’ve made and regretted or ended up not wearing them. I’m sure you have too and in this belt tightening times, not wasting money on what you don’t really need should be at the top of your new year’s resolutions. Read these tips!
Stop wasting money and avoid these mistakes when you go shopping
Do you go shopping and always end up buying the same thing? Are you tired of buying clothes you never wear? Do you discover clothing in your wardrobe that you didn’t even know you had?
If you’re spending a lot on clothes but your style never improves, you’re making the same mistakes as most women when you go shopping:
- Not having a plan for building a basic wardrobe
- Not having a personal style
These are the biggest mistakes to avoid when it’s time to go shopping:
- Not looking in your closet before you go shopping.
- Not taking a list of what you really need.
- Not prioritizing what you really need to buy.
- Leaving without a plan of the stores you’ll shop at.
- Wearing unsuitable clothing when you shop.
- Going shopping when you’re feeling down.
- Buying items you really don’t need just because they’re on sale.
- Buying clothes that make you feel uncomfortable.
Never buy:
- Boots that extend above the knee. You’ll never wear them.
- Jeans that are too tight. You’ll be uncomfortable when you wear them, and you’ll stop pulling them out of your closet. Besides, too-tight jeans aren’t flattering and they’re not good for the circulation in your legs.
- See-through white pants. There’s nothing worse than showing off your panties…
- Bras if you don’t fill out the cups or if you’re bulging out of them. You’ll look bigger than you really are, and even the best outfit can be ruined by an ill-fitting bra.
- Miniskirts that are too short – unless you’re 20, you have the legs of a supermodel or you’re headed to the beach.
Some tricks for making a good purchase:
- Keep your personal style in mind and be consistent.
- Create a plan of what you really need.
- Set a budget.
- When you come across a piece of clothing that makes you feel good and fits with your style, buy it!
- If you find something in black that you like and it works for you, buy two!
- Put together a basic wardrobe.
- Don’t buy anything on sale that you wouldn’t buy if it were full price.

The Making Of A Hermes Birkin
Filed Under Bags, Fashion | Leave a Comment
Saw this amazing video on the creation of the gorgeous Hermes bag- stitch by stitch from start to end! It will really heighten your appreciation of hand crafted leather bags!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oTtvhqA-KM]
At the same time, there’s a story by blogger Michael Tonello as he uncovers the mystery behind the Birkin and in the fashion equivalent of a tell-all book calledBringing Home The Birkin shows the masses of the world how they, too, can by-pass the marketing-ploy waiting list. How did he do it?
“I would go into a store with a list in my Hermes Ulysse notebook and pile up scarves, shawls, bracelets, worth about $2,000. This made me seem a regular Hermes client,” Tonello told Reuters in a telephone interview.
“Once I had that pile ready to buy at the last moment I’d ask for a Birkin and they would usually produce one of the back room. In 2005 I bought 130 Birkins in a three-month period — and you tell me there is a waiting list?”
So there you have it. The one-step, one-stop shop guide to buying a Birkin. Do, however, learn from his mistakes and don’t buy too many, too quickly:
“In the store in Paris I went in maybe once too often and they checked the computer and discovered how many bags I had bought. They sent me a fax saying essentially they would no longer sell me any bags.”

Makeup Tip: Sexy Red & Black
Filed Under Beauty Tips, Fashion, Hair | Leave a Comment
Red and Black are my favourite colours for the intense sexy aura they exude anytime and anywhere, and these 2 colours form the base and body of my wardrobe. I was delighted to see this article for its tips and put it here to share:

Makeup
The classic red lip and dark eye - how could we skip this one?
Key points:
- Lighter-than-normal skin: This is a must so you can add more impact to the lips and eyes.
- Eyes: as black as possible. This adds depth and dimension to your eyes. Don’t forget to apply black kohl in the inner rim of your eyes; it’s a must. Your eyes have to be black, black, black. You’ll make the color of your iris and the whites of your eyes pop.
- And now add the special touch….a smokey black eye. Choose glitter in any color you like. It’s best if it is as refined as possible and is a product made especially for applying to the eyes. Apply it in the center of the eyelid with your fingertip. To set it, use a little cream shadow.
- Define the cheeks with a little bronzing powder or earth tone blush so you don’t add too much color.
- And for the lips, the required red. What better time than the holidays to debut a new lipstick? Remember to line your lips and fill them in with a liner in the same color. If you choose a matte lipstick, it will last longer. If you use gloss on top or a shiny lipstick, the red will wear off sooner.
Hairstyle
What do you think about this idea? Wear a fun scarf or an elegant cap (there are some really cute ones out there.) You can also decorate them with sequins, feather, or even your own decorations.
- Curl the ends of your hair with a ceramic curling iron and then comb through your hair to break up the curls.
- Put on the cap or scarf and treat the tips of your hair to a small dose of serum: this will hydrate your hair and add shine.
PROFESSIONAL SECRET
Multicolor glitter in a gel base is available at Make Up Store. The glitter adheres perfectly to your skin, so there’s no risk of getting it in your eyes. You can use it alone or on top of any other product. It’s perfect for the holidays!

Gossip Girl
Filed Under Fashion | Leave a Comment
I had been too engrossed in watching the entire Gossip Girl series (1&2) to update my blog! I’m so in love with all the fabulous clothes and looks! Every episode just gets better and better! Blake Lively and Leighton Meester look absolutely gorgeous in every episode! I also love Michelle Trachtenberg’s look!
The head of the makeup department is Amy Tagliamonte, and the head stylist is Eric Daman (who also assisted Patricia Fields in Sex & the City). The dresses “designed’ by Elanor Waldrof is actually a real collection from Lorick! Eric did a fantastic job with the costumes, its definitely a major draw factor to continue watching the show even if the plot gets weirder and more unbelievable!

Oooh my, let me drool over the fabulous collections…. Thanks for the glimpse into your elite style, upper eastsiders!

Shapewear
Filed Under Beauty Tips, Fashion | 4 Comments
As any mommy would know, post pregnant tummys don’t get back into shape the way you like it to. Thank goodness for shapewear which acts like a corset (but softer and way more comfortable) to help hold it all in! After all, even if you’re not post partum, don’t you want a beautiful body to go with your beautiful face?
I had gotten my shapewear from Marks & Spencer, and it’s great that there are other places online to get shapewear like Victoria’s Secret, Jockey, Spanx, Lipo in a Box, Yummie Tummie, Sassybax and Flabuless. Any reviews on these products?
